CHARLIE CHAPLIN’S THE CIRCUS
AUGUST 19, 2019, 7 PM
Charlie Chaplin’s The Circus (1928) is considered by some critics to be, along with The Gold Rush (1925), one of his two greatest comedies. Chaplin began work on this film in 1925, using story ideas and themes from his early short The Vagabond (1916). The story of The Tramp inadvertently becoming the star attraction of a travelling circus, it has the comedy, romance, and pathos that have made Chaplin’s films successful and cherished. The Circus is a rarely shown work by one of the greatest silent film auteurs.
